Twitch will be removing the host mode feature
#1
Throughout the years, many creators have looked at Twitch‘s host mode feature as a crucial part of discovery on the platform. Streamers are able to use their channel to host a friend’s stream while offline, while also providing viewers with a constant stream of content without having to manually find another creator. On September 6, Twitch updated its website to reveal that they will be removing the feature — and streamers aren’t exactly happy.

"Viewers want to interact with a streamer when they’re live and host mode blocks this from happening," the page reads. "Preventing viewers from interacting with the streamer they’re watching also limits a streamer’s growth potential because they’re not able to build meaningful connections with those new viewers."

Introduced in 2014, host mode allowed streamers to provide their audiences another stream to view after they went online. While host mode was active, the hosting streaming would still appear as online, but their channel would essentially feature a content creator of their choice though hold a completely separate chat.

Shortly after the removal announcement, it began making its way around Twitter. Twitch streamers took to their accounts to slam the website for removing the feature.

As to how Twitch aims to help support the growth of streamers without the host mode, it explained that users will be able to use the new "shoutout" feature--which will be available sometime this month. By typing "/shoutout [channel]" in their chatbox, streamers can share a follow button to the mentioned account, allowing viewers to follow without leaving the broadcast they're watching.
